Travel Questions
-
What city should we fly into?
We recommend flying into Milan via Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). From the airport, it is about a 45-minute drive to Cernobbio. There are direct flights out of JFK and Newark and connecting flights out of Logan.
-
When should I arrive in Lake Como?
We're kicking the week off with welcome drinks on Sunday, September 15. We suggest that all guests depart the US on Friday or Saturday if possible, arriving in Italy by Sunday to give yourself enough time to acclimate to the time difference. Also, with the current state of the FAA, this will also give you enough time to rebook a flight in case yours gets canceled (worst case scenario!).
-
How do I get from the airport to Cernobbio?
Cernobbio is a 30-45 minute drive from MXP, we suggest booking a car service ahead of time or finding a taxi at the airport. To note, there are no taxis in Cernobbio, so you will have to pre-book a car to get back to the airport. We suggest doing so ahead of time or at your hotel.
-
What part of the lake should we stay on?
We strongly recommend staying in or near Cernobbio, where all wedding transportation will leave from. If you choose to stay in other cities like Como, Varenna or Bellagio, you will be responsible for your own transportation to the venues. There are private water taxis for hire around the lake. To note, the lake is bigger than it looks and it can take hours to get from one side to the other.
-
Can I use my cell phone in Italy?
Please be sure to inform your cell phone provider that you will be traveling to Italy to avoid any surprise charges. Usually they can provide you with an international day pass option (AT&T and Verizon’s are $10/day for unlimited calls, texts, and data).
-
What will the weather be like?
75° / 55° - Lake Como enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with pleasant temperatures and sunshine all year. September is at the end of peak vacation time, with hot, sunny days and cooler nights. The summer months are humid and have the possibility of rain, so bring an umbrella or raincoat just in case. If you don’t want to stand out as a tourist, we suggest leaving your activewear, t-shirts and flip flops at home, swapping them for smart casual options like sundresses and button-downs.
-
Where is the closet train station?
If you are traveling by train before or after the wedding, we recommend using the Milan Centrale train station as your hub. You can take train trips to Rome (about 3 hours), Venice (about 2.5 hours) as well as Florence, Cinque Terre and many other locations. You can catch a train to Milan Centrale from Como's San Giovanni station, a 15 minute car or ferry ride from Cernobbio.
-
Do you have any recommendations for where to eat or things to do on Lake Como?
Yes, check out the “Explore Cernobbio” tab at the top of the page to see our suggestions for restaurants and activities.
-
Are there Ubers in Italy?
While Ubers exist in other parts of Italy, such as Rome or Milan, they do not operate in the Lake Como region. If you are planning on needing car transportation, we suggest booking a car service ahead of time. Here are two private car companies we would recommend: Lake Como Transfers and Taxi Como.
-
Can I use my credit card in Italy?
Please inform your credit card company that you are traveling prior to departing the US - this will prevent it being locked due to fraud speculations. If your credit card comes with no foreign transaction fees, that'll be a huge plus! You'll be able to use your card like normal without having the card company charge you a fee or percentage for foreign purchases. If ever prompted to choose between paying in USD or Euro always pay in the local currency (Euro), which allows your bank to set the exchange rate, it will always be a better option. We also suggest bringing a small amount of Euro with you as many taxis and small cafes do not accept cards.
-
Where can I get Euro?
While most businesses accept credit cards, we suggest bringing some Euro with you just in case as any small cafes and gelaterias will only accept Euro. We suggest doing this before you leave the US as airport currency exchanges usually have significantly worse rates than banks. We typically do so at AAA, but many banks will provide Euro as well if asked for in advance.
-
What's the food like there?
It goes without saying that Italy is known for its food and you’ll be able to try many traditional Italian foods at our events. During the time surrounding the wedding, we suggest you try dishes that are specialties to the region. Because of its proximity to Switzerland, you’ll find that a lot of the food in the area has Alpine influences. Creamy risottos, polentas, mushrooms and truffles are often at the forefront of many menus, alongside lake fish such as perch, carp and eel. If you’re looking for a local pasta dish, opt for pizzoccheri if it’s on the menu. It’s a buckwheat pasta often served with garlic and cheese. If you want something more familiar, don’t worry, you’ll be able to find the classics like gelato, cacio e pepe, carbonara and pizza too!
-
Can I plug in my electronics?
The electrical outlets in Italy vary from American ones in two main ways, socket construction and voltage. In order to charge devices like your phone or laptop, you will simply need a plug adapter as most are built for dual voltage (but always check your personal ones to make sure!). These can be bought in packs on Amazon, and we suggest bringing a few. These allow you to plug your electrical device into the Italian wall socket, but they do not convert the electricity to the American 110 volts. If you’re using something like a hair dryer or curling iron, it is most likely designed to run only on 110-120 volts. If you plug these in without converting the voltage, you are likely to see smoke, if not fire. You will need a step-down power converter or transformer to safely step the voltage down from 220 to 110. To note, if you are traveling to other countries before or after the wedding please check to make sure you have the correct electrical accessories needed for their systems, it can vary throughout Europe.

Are there any Italian social norms that aren’t common in the US?
While there are many similarities to American norms, there are a few differences in Italy worth being aware of. Firstly, tipping is at your discretion. It is not customary to tip in Italy as waiters are paid a living salary. We suggest tipping if you find the service extraordinary or if you hope to frequent the restaurant. Instead of tips, some restaurants with charge you a small fee, a coperto, to sit at a table. These can range from 1-5 euro per person and will be listed on your bill. Speaking of bills, waiters will not bring you your bill unless you ask for it “il conto per favore”. Also, most locals will wear dresses and slacks to go about their days. Things like athleisure, t-shirts and athletic sneakers will look out of place (and you might get a few looks!). Italians also do not drink milk after breakfast, so you might have to specify if you want a cappuccino in the afternoon. Also worth noting that “lattes” do not exist in Italy. If you order one you will probably get served just a cup of warm milk. Lastly, when entering and exiting stores or restaurants it is considered polite to say “ciao” hello, “buongiornio” good morning, or “buona sera” good afternoon.
